The Listed Gosford Gold Cup is conducted on a Thursday in late November annually, and is a 2100m staying test worth a generous $125,000 in prize money.

Each year a maximum field of 16 runners, plus four emergencies, contests the Gosford Gold Cup many of which are coming off runs in the Melbourne Spring Racing Carnival.

The repositioning of the Gosford Gold Cup to a spring date was introduced in 2009, and the quality of horses attracted to the Cup has grown since then as the race provides a good natural progression in distance for horses suited to the staying features.

Gosford Gold Cup History

The Gosford Gold Cup was first run in 1961 when Our Add claimed victory.

It began as a Principal race run over 10 furlongs, the race distance converted to 2100m with the introduction of the metric system in 1973.

In 1980 the Gosford Gold Cup was elevated to its current Listed status in the Australian race grading.

From the years 1986 – 2006 the Cup was a Group 3 event, but was downgraded to a Listed feature once again in 2008.

Gosford Gold Cup Betting

One race that has served as an excellent indicator to the Gosford Gold Cup is the Group 3 Hawkesbury Cup (1600m), which 2009 Gosford Gold Cup winner Spinney previously ran second in.
